This continuing education event reviews the functional and mental health impacts of sexual abuse on children in different developmental stages. Training will include review of current literature on Play Therapy treatment of sexual abuse including identification of play themes, treatment strategies, and challenges of working with the population. Participants will learn specific Play Therapy interventions to support children and treat the trauma of sexual abuse. Participants will learn through lecture, video demonstration, interactive practice, case review, and large group discussion. Completion of a Post-test and Evaluation is required for participants to receive CE credit.

Learning Objectives

1. Differentiate between normative sexual development and biopsychosocial impacts of sexual abuse on development.

2. Recite the SECURE lens model for trauma-informed Play Therapy.

3. Identify major play themes and play scenarios common to victims of sexual abuse.

4. Develop targeted treatment strategies to address common trauma responses.

5. Use directive Play Therapy interventions to alleviate trauma related to sexual abuse.

6. Apply self-care and trauma stewardship strategies to promote sustainable practice.
