About this live event

Participants will learn about commonly prescribed psychotropic medications for children and how to collaborate effectively with prescribing physicians. Participants will learn how to assess for the impact of medications on play behavior and playful strategies to communicate with children and families about their medications, their use, and their impact on behavior. Training will include practice resources, discussion of case examples, and discussion of how to create treatment plans that integrate the use of psychotropic medications. Completion of a Post-test and Evaluation is required for participants to receive CE credit.

Learning Objectives

1. Assess for the impact of psychopharmaceuticals on play behaviors of clients in Play Therapy.

2. Identify commonly prescribed psychopharmaceutical medications and their impacts on child behavior and play behavior.

3. List side effects and adverse reactions to psychopharmaceuticals that Play Therapists may assess for in Play Therapy.

4. Prepare playful Play Therapy strategies for communicating with children and families about psychopharmacological treatment.

5. Identify strategies for Play Therapists to communicate and collaborate with prescribing professionals about.

6. Create treatment plans that integrate Play Therapy and psychopharmacological interventions.

9:00 am – 10:30 am – Introduction to Child Psychopharmacology
10:30 am – 12:00 pm – Play Therapy with clients prescribed Stimulant medications
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm - Lunch
1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Play Therapy with clients prescribed Anxiolytic & Antidepressant Medications 
2:30 pm – 4:00 pm – Play Therapy with clients prescribed Antipsychotic and other Medications
4:00 pm - Wrap-up, Review, Evaluation, & Post-Test

Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner - Board Certified

I am a mental health nurse experienced in treatment of various psychiatric disorders as well as chemical dependency in the adult and adolescent populations. Perform physical, psychosocial, and emotional assessments. Use assessment data to anticipate patient's needs and expectations. Promptly identify changes in conditions as evidenced by nursing assessment and other assessment tools and reports changes and/or takes follow-up action as appropriate. Evaluate implemented interventions and modify care given according to the evaluation. Follow hospital and/or department policies, procedures, clinical pathways, and nationally accepted standards of nursing practice. Ensure the safety of patients and staff. Participate in performance improvement / quality measures. Serve as a primary preceptor for new graduate nurses.
