About this live event

This continuing education event teaches participants a theoretical framework for integrating Gay and Gender Affirmative Therapy practices with Play Therapy! Participants will gain an understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity concepts and how to work effectively with clients and families of varying sexual orientations and gender identities. Participants will learn through lecture, video demonstration, interactive practice, case review, and large group discussion.

Learning Objectives

  1. Assess client sexual orientation and gender identity and related psychosocial impacts.

  2. Design affirmative approaches to clinical intervention using Play Therapy.

  3. Apply affirmative approaches of Play Therapy through interactive practice to abate cultural, internalized, and political oppression.

  4. Recite ethical codes and laws that impact practice of Play Therapy with LGBTQ* clients.

  5. Explain the value of affirmative Play Therapy approaches to parents, educators, and adults in the client’s ecosystem.

  6. Identify ethical Play Therapy practices of documentation and treatment planning for LGBTQ* families.

Executive Director, A Time for Play | Play Therapy Training Series

Steven L. Parks is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board Approved Supervisor and serves in the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work as a full-time clinical Senior Lecturing Faculty professor. Steven is a Registered Play Therapist & Supervisor (RPT-S) and the Executive Director of the A Time for Play nonprofit organization based in Houston, TX. He also maintains a private practice in Sugar Land, Texas and specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing trauma symptoms, depression, anxiety, and externalizing behaviors. Steven has a Bachelor’s of Arts degree of Psychology from Texas Tech University, a Master’s of Business Administration degree from University of Houston Bauer College of Business, and a Master’s of Social Work degree from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Steven volunteers regularly with the National Association of Social Workers Texas (NASWTx), and serves as the Board Chair of Tony's Place, a local LGBTQ+ Community Organization.

The mission of A Time for Play is to promote access to effective mental health services within the community, primarily by educating mental health professionals on the theories, benefits, techniques, and skills of Play Therapy and ethical clinical practice. A Time for Play delivers mental health training services to local, state, national, and international audiences. The nonprofit expands access by providing continuing education workshops in-person, virtually, by request, and on-demand. A Time for Play is actively diversifying the profession of Play Therapy and expanding access to Play Therapy services through scholarship opportunities.
