Stormy weather
Although Hurricane season begins at the start of Summer, the major storms always seem to come for Houston around this time of year. The news is currently full of storm warnings, which may trigger anxiety, panic, and trauma symptoms, especially in those of us who have experienced severe natural disasters. Weather related trauma is increasingly common around the world and adults may forget how susceptible children are to these traumas. Parents can mitigate weather related stress and trauma by helping children feel prepared. Children can be engaged in storm preparation activities, like packing a backpack with flashlights, snacks, and a spot for a beloved stuffy. Parents may use storm days, when schools close, as opportunities for connection and play with their children. Creative play in particular, like making slime, painting, and working with clay can provide children with an outlet for big emotions around weather and be a joyful way to wait out the weather.
